A long-standing tradition.
The Diablo series is one of the oldest franchises in the ARPG/MMORPG genre. The first Diablo game was released 26 years ago on the PC and PlayStation; Blizzard has added a few more games to the franchise, the latest of which is Diablo Immortal – Blizzard’s maiden attempt at an ARPG/MMORPG for the mobile platform.
The Diablo franchise has always been known for the distinct dungeon-crawling experience it provides to ARPG/MMORPG fans. With that said, there is one thing that many Diablo fans are probably expecting to see from newer additions in the franchise – a Cow Level.
If you’re wondering what a Cow Level is, you’ve come to the right place; we will tell you more about Cow Level and whether it can be found in Diablo Immortal.
What is Cow Level in Diablo Immortal?
Cow Level was a hoax that originated in the original Diablo game. Rumors spread about a special cow amongst a herd of cattle in the town hub area in-game, which, when clicked multiple times, allegedly spawned a red portal that would send players to a secret level in-game.
While it was later found out that the hoax was a Photoshopped image, it spawned a series of references in future Diablo games and expansion packs. The first came from Synergistic Software, who developed an expansion pack called Hellfire that referenced the rumored Cow Level by adding an NPC in a cow suit. Then Blizzard referenced Cow Level through a cheat code for StarCraft in 1998.
The Blizzard devs eventually added a real Cow Level in Diablo II as official postgame content. Players could unlock Cow Level by collecting specific magical items and completing the game at a specific difficulty. Combining the items using the Horadric Cube spawned a red portal, sending players to an area filled with Hell Bovines – bipedal cows equipped with polearms. The Cow Level also featured its boss, The Cow King, who will reward players with quest rewards when defeated.
Is There a Cow Level in Diablo Immortal?
No, there is no Cow Level – as stated in one of Diablo Immortal’s loading screens.
Cow Level is unavailable in Diablo Immortal, or at least not yet. Historically, Cow Levels were typically added later into each Diablo game’s life as part of an expansion pack or small update. Diablo Immortal is still a relatively new game that’s less than a year old, which means Blizzard has a ton of time to add a Cow Level reference in-game through a future update.
Moo Moo
Cow Level is one of the most recognizable in-jokes in gaming history. What started as a Photoshopped joke about a special cow has since been recognized by the game’s devs as an amusing hoax that eventually made it to the actual game as official special levels.
Previous Diablo games have all had Cow Level references in one way or another, which means there’s a good chance Diablo Immortal will get one soon too.
