EA had fumbled the bag with their reboot of Star Wars Battlefront, and Battlefront II was able to get some players back on their side, it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting a sequel anytime soon.
What’s interesting is, Naughty Dog lead designer Michael Barclay has opened up about his time working on Star Wars Battlefront III around the 2010s, and he pretty much says it was ‘criminal’ that the game was cancelled so close to the finish line. Here’s his post:
Over the years, we’ve been getting some test footage for Battlefront III online, and probably the most hyped up feature of the game was that it would allow players to jump into ships mid-battle, fly into the huge capital ships, and then get off and fight some more on the ground. Here’s some footage:
Admittedly, DICE had tried to live up to the Battlefront name with their games, but because the launch was mired with controversy thanks to a messed up progression system, the game didn’t do so well upon release; and the damage had already been done despite the developers’ best efforts to fix everything that was wrong with the game at launch.
We don’t know what the future holds for Star Wars shooters, but Battlefront is definitely something that a lot of fans hold dear to their hearts. Maybe we’ll get a new game in the future, but for now, it looks like we’ll have to wait and see what’s up Lucasfilm Games’ sleeves.
We may not be getting Battlefront III anytime soon, but DICE’s Star Wars Battlefront II is still worth checking out on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
