Everyone is excited about the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie this week, but another film about colorful blocks is also going to be making its debut soon—and no, it’s not Tetris.
According to Deadline, the Minecraft movie is now set to release on April 4, 2025. The movie is set to star Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones, Aquaman) and is being directed by Jared Hess (Nacho Libre, Napoleon Dynamite).
According to Video Game Chronicle, a Minecraft movie had been announced way back in 2014, but the project had just taken so long to develop, with multiple directors coming and going from Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) to Rob McElhenny (Mythic Quest, It’s Always Sunny in Philadephia). We don’t know why the project has taken so long in Development Hell, but I am excited that they landed Jared Hess as the director; though he hasn’t been making much movies now, his brand of humor and style is still pretty unique, and I think that it could fit very well for a live-action Minecraft film.
While fans thought that The Last of Us had broken the video-game-movies-are-bad curse, early reviews for The Super Mario Bros. Movie haven’t exactly been sparkling. That being said, a lot of fans still have hope, and maybe Hess has a unique direction he wants to take Minecraft. I can’t wait for the first teaser.
Minecraft is set to come out to theaters on April 4, 2025. You can check out the game on mobile, PC, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox.
